(Hermitage, TN) All Star Medical Shares Medical Equipment
Knowledge with Local Occupational Therapy Students From Tennessee State
University
Last month, for the third year in a row, All Star Medical
based out of Hermitage, TN hosted the Occupational Therapy students from
Tennessee State University for an educational workshop. This full-day event included hands-on product
exposure and training, demonstrations on how to properly fit their patient’s
for most mobility related items like wheelchairs, canes, walkers, and mobility scooters,
and a better understanding of what’s available to the aging population to make
their homes more accessible and safe.
“The ultimate goal is to give these students resources
and information that they will need as they pursue their careers in
healthcare. Knowing what’s available for
their patients in order to age at home verses a skilled or assisted facility is
a shared outcome. Here at All Star we
want all medical professionals to be knowledgeable of how to facilitate that
outcome,” said owner Kevin Brown.
It’s a fact that most homes in greater middle Tennessee are
not exactly handicap accessible. But
with a budget that is fractions of the cost of nursing homes and assisted
living, homes can be made functional for the elderly, disabled, and
injured. During the workshop students were
shown things like stair lifts that can be used to safely travel from one level
of the home to the next, zero barrier showers for wheelchair users or those
unable to use a standard tub/shower, various types of ramps ranging from small doorway
thresholds to multiple steps requiring upwards of 20 feet of ramp.
The students left the workshop with more knowledge of
medical equipment and the accessories available to adequately provide patients
what they need, when they need it, contacts in the medical equipment industry
with many years of experience from both the manufacturing side and supplier
side, and a great day of learning outside of the classroom.
In a time when healthcare is ever changing, one thing is
consistent and certain and that is that the population is aging at a very rapid
pace. Facilities are crowded and
expensive. Demand for medical equipment
is on the rise. The need for informed
decision making when it comes to the care of a patient and/or a loved one is
crucial. Proactive learning and
educational opportunities like the one that TSU Occupational Therapy students
received at this workshop will be value added to the patient care they provide
in their field when they graduate.
All Star Medical is asking that if other local colleges or
universities would like to schedule a workshop to please contact Kevin Brown
