Canes
Canes are the most ancient form of medical technology with evidence of prehistoric use of walking sticks by injured humans. Although the design has changed, canes are still used for the same purpose.
Canes are only able to bear 25% of your body weight so they are not as supportive as a walker or rollator but for those who only need minimal assistance, a cane is the perfect mobility aid.
A cane is a great options for those who have:
- Minor problems with balance or stability
- Weakness in their leg or trunk
- An injury or
- Pain
And depending on the specific need of the user, there are different styles of canes available, including folding canes.
For minimal support or temporary use for injury recovery, a single point cane can help you walk more safely and comfortably by providing the additional support to eliminate weight on an injury.
Four point or “quad” canes have four small feet at the end, forming a base. They provide more stability than single point canes and stand on their own. This type of cane is ideal for elderly users that are still able to walk but need more stability or those with advanced arthritis. Walkers
Walkers offer reliable stability for those who need a little extra help getting around. They come in two main styles: wheeled and non-wheeled.
- Non-wheeled walkers are a great choice for individuals who primarily need assistance with balance. Since they require the user to lift and move the walker forward with each step, they might not be the most suitable option for someone with limited arm strength.
- Wheeled walkers, typically with two wheels in the front, provide both maneuverability and stability. They glide along easily, making movement smoother and less demanding.
While walkers themselves don’t come with a seat, they can be customized with handy accessories like pouches, trays, or baskets to carry your belongings while you walk.
Rollators
Think of a rollator as an advanced walker with enhanced mobility. Available in three or four wheels, they offer greater freedom of movement while still providing support. If you are able to walk independently with little to no balance issues yet lack endurance, a rollator is an ideal solution.
- Three-wheeled models have one wheel in front and 2 in back making them smaller and more compact. They work well in tight spaces and make sharp turns. Because they are more narrow, these rollators do not come with a seat, but rather just a storage bag.
- Four-wheeled rollators prioritize stability and are the most common type of rollator. As its name suggests, it has four wheels: two swivels in the front and two fixed wheels in the back. These rollators also come with a built-in padded seat as well as a basket or other storage compartment for your personal belongings.
Another style of four-wheeled rollator is the upright model. These rollators, sometimes called upright walkers, position the users arms at a 90°angle promoting a fuller upright walking position. This position helps eliminate tension in the shoulders and neck and allows users to look forward.
Which is Your Best Option?
The ideal walking aid depends on your specific needs. Canes provide that little bit of extra support for injury recovery, pain, or minor balance problems. For those independently walking but seeking help with balance and endurance, a rollator may be the right fit. However, walkers stand out as the best choice for those who prioritize stable support to maintain their independence.
