Many individuals find that as they age, tasks and simple everyday day activities can become harder and more time consuming. When navigating the home and preforming basic self-care tasks becomes too much to do on one’s own, it may be time to investigate assisted living or a nursing home.
But what about those elderly that are able to care for themselves and live mostly independent in their home, but can no longer navigate the stairs to get to their door or second floor of the home, or basement? Making the move to an assisted living center at this time would decrease their independence and maintaining one’s independence through aging is a key factor in preserving quality of life. A stair lift may be just the thing to help these individuals stay comfortably in their home in Gainesboro, and maintain independence and dignity.
Some individuals may feel comfortable in their home but due to an injury, have difficulty using the stairs. They may have fallen before and using the stairs could cause anxiety and limit their access to basic necessities. Being able to move around safely is a big inconvenience for lots of seniors. Simple and quick home modifications for seniors can help them feel more independent.
But what exactly is a stair lift? In essence, it is a chair that moves along a rail or track affixed to a set of stairs. The chair’s base contains a motor that is often powered by a battery that is also located there. A gear that is meshing into a geared strip on the track or rail is rotated by the stair lift motor. The chair is moved down the geared strip as the gear turns. The chair moves in one direction when the motor spins the gear; in the opposite direction when the motor is turned the other way.
Without anyone inside, the chair can be moved using the call/send controls. This is especially useful if there are two persons using the lift at the same time and one of them wants to use it but the lift is at the other end of the track. A call/send switch is used by the user to simply request that the lift be sent to them. The call/send switch can also be used to dispatch the lift after use. When not in use, some people will move the lift to the opposite end of the house because they don’t like the way it looks there. They just dial it back when necessary.
No matter the design of your stairs; curved or straight, nor the location; basement, garage, stairs to a deck or patio, a lift can be installed virtually anywhere. Numerous options exist to further customize the lift to your needs. For example, the chair and rails can be customized to match your décor. You can install a power swivel chair and order a lift to be configured to different weight capacities. Some models even have folding rails and remotes!
Acorn 130 fits to the stairs and not the wall so there are no structural changes to your home and folds away so there is no obstruction to the stairs for others to use. Includes safety sensors that detect an obstruction on the track. Acorn also makes the Superglide for outdoor stairs. This too fits on to the stairs, comes with a waterproof cover, 2 remote controls, folding arms and a safety belt. The Acorn 180 curve chair is ideal for stairs that have a 90 degree turn or multiple angles.
